Senior DevSecOps Engineer - DataMeshGroup
Security and privacy are fundamental to managing organisations. Let's make their implementation as open, easy, and accessible as possible. For this reason, I spent most of my career building solutions, frameworks and platforms. A focus that enabled me to deliver high security value in a straightforward, cost-effective way. Over the years, I have found that the key to my success depends on three crucial foundations. The first is continuous learning and improvement. The second is keeping things pragmatic and straightforward. The third is a strong connection with the relevant communities in and out of my organisation.
My career journey in security started in 2006, but the CISSP certification I achieved in 2009 gave the proper context and structure to my endeavour. A year later, in 2010, I secured a highly sought-after job as a cyber security architect for the biggest bank in Israel, Bank Hapoalim. Working as a cyber security architect, year by year, I came to realise that my best value is in Secure Systems Development Life Cycle(SSDLC) and Application Security. In 2012, I led a big SSDLC transformation project for the bank. In 2013, I became the manager of a team of 5 architects, which later grew to two teams of 5. By 2014, the cloud revolution was changing the future of IT, and I focused my ongoing studies on this domain. Cloud-native technologies were quickly transforming how applications were developed and deployed to production. After a year of complex studies, I landed a new role as a senior cloud architect for a multi-national technology giant, Amdocs. Working for Amdocs, I created a global organisation's security framework for cloud adoption and was knee-deep in complex IT/cyber security transformation projects. This role introduced me to DevOps and DevSecOps and showed me how small agile teams can achieve extraordinary things together.
Since 2017, I have followed my path in helping organisations with significant transformation projects. I am looking to join the right teams at the right time and work in a collaborative and agile environment to make a change in security, application, and cloud delivery.

Platform Engineering is one of the big trends of the recent past. Why is important and what are the main success factors of platform engineering?
The easiest way to get started is by understanding platforms as a way for better scaling development cost: By pushing repeated work into the platform, you benefit from economies of scale. A bit more advanced is to use platforms as a vehicle for standardization:
By making opinionated decisions, you encourage and support teams to adopt a shared set of tools and technologies. The most challenging factor is to use platforms as a way to boost innovation: When teams start contributing their products to the platform, collaboration effort is reduced and the platform becomes a digital representation of your organization's core capabilities.
We will look at these success factors in detail and also discuss specific steps you can take to get the most out of your platform investments.

In a world of transformations plagued by legacy applications, modernisation can be a daunting proposition.
A team at Bendigo Bank has been using GenAI to modernise an ageing app to a target-state architecture. They've achieved a 90% savings on development effort compared with the non-GenAI-supported estimates.
At the same time, they created a repeatable pattern for more than just 'lift 'n' shift' between platforms. This was only possible from having invested in - and adopted - an API strategy that starts with thinking of APIs as products.
This talk shares the team's experience of doing this global-first use case for GenAI; and why success relied as much on adopting an API mindset and good practices, as it did from using technology.

Traditionally, API programs focus on API exposure. But is this really sufficient to make an API program successful? We believe, that API exposure is only half the story, the other half is the consumption of APIs, which is often neglected.
Successful API programs consider both sides - they see APIs as part of a broader platform. In such a platform approach, both sides are supported by appropriate tooling and best practices. While API management governs API exposure, which tools do we use for governing API consumption?
Join Matthias as he explores how platform thinking can supercharge your API strategy, with best practices for democratising APIs, providing guardrails for consuming APIs, and improved tooling to realise a platform strategy.

We would like to share valuable insights from a recent API Security Hackathon where we invited Red Teams from large enterprises to compete to exploit a deliberately flawed application. These teams were welcomed to use their most sophisticated tools to breach the application's defences. The team that uncovered the most weaknesses emerged victorious.
However, the story did not end there. In the second phase, we implemented a comprehensive API Security Framework on the same flawed application. The Red Teams were then challenged to use their previously successful methods to breach the now-secured application. To their surprise, the once-vulnerable application withstood their attacks, showcasing the significant impact of a robust security framework.
This session will recount the thrilling details of the hackathon and highlight the profound lessons learned. Attendees from APIDays Australia will gain insights into practical steps for fortifying API security and understand how proactive measures can prevent devastating data breaches even when having vulnerabilities in place.

This talk will describe how Suncorp’s technology landscape was simplified to support rapid delivery of software solutions for the Banking and Insurance businesses.
Suncorp's API strategy is made up of three layers: Experience APIs, Domain APIs, and Abstraction/System APIs.
These layers abstract functionality and system logic of back-end systems and expose high-level APIs to front-end developers for rapidly delivering solutions.
The front-end developer can make requests of our Policy and Claims systems without needing to know how they work.
To achieve this, we adopted industry best practices for APIs: specification, design, implementation, use (and reuse), governance and management.
Enterprise Integration Architect - Suncorp
Thsi talk is about the cross company initiative I drive in Telstra to move away from traditional gateway-centric therefore vendor locked-in single API Management platform model to a federated API Management model where we can choose the 'best-of-breed' technology to support different areas within the API lifecycle - API design, API development, API testing, API security, API discover ability & observability, API developer portal, API mediation infrastructure, each of this component can be individually innovated e.g., Gen AI assisted with it's own pace depends on the developers' need
The federated API management provides the right balance between agility and governance in managing APIs across different teams within Telstra and help us to operate in scale and prevent or tackle API Sprawl.
Enterprise Architect - APIM - Telstra
With the increasing challenges surrounding user privacy in software applications, there is a growing need for software developers to possess the skills and knowledge to embed privacy measures into their apps.
However, incorporating privacy practices, such as data minimisation, privacy by design, and compliance with regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), remains uncommon in the software development community. Therefore, this talk proposes a game design framework as an educational tool for software developers to improve their "secure coding behaviour", so they can develop privacy-preserving apps that people can use. The elements of the proposed framework were incorporated into a gaming application scenario that enhances the software developers' coding behaviour through their motivation.
The proposed work bridges the divide between theoretical privacy practices and their practical adoption within the software development community, ultimately enabling developers to create privacy-centric apps that safeguard user data.

Successful API implementations are vital to the financial services industry. In today's business environment, the stakes for API success have never been higher. Considerations such as security threats, data leaks, customer privacy, and, regulatory and reputational impacts need to be at the forefront of any API implementation.
Paramount to any API delivery is understanding the expected functional scope required by stakeholders; as well as managing essential non-functional requirements. Performance, security, monitoring, alerting and other elements of production readiness are critical elements in an effective and robust API design. Convincing stakeholders of the value of these non-functional requirements can be challenging yet detrimental if it is not done correctly.
Understanding what stakeholders want and what they need (but don’t know it) can make or break the implementation. Coupled with this is finding a good systems integrator and managing these partners effectively. Tracking progress, spotting red flags early and communicating to your stakeholder’s expectations are the cornerstone to achieving success, regardless of how good the design was.
Colleen Pender (Head of Technology, Technology Services at NAB) brings this topic to life through her firsthand experience, while implementing APIs at scale on a large transformational migration project. An increasing number of AI projects depend on real-time information and situational context. While APIM and iPaaS vendors are crucial components, they alone are insufficient. To unlock the full value of AI, you must enhance integration with asynchronous APIs and implement an event-driven data distribution layer that can deliver vast amounts of precisely targeted information in real time—what we call a “context mesh.”
In this session, you will learn what a context mesh is and how it can simplify your system while leveraging asynchronous APIs to feed the vector databases that AI agents require for real-time context.
You will also discover the three pillars of today’s integration strategy that provide quantifiable business benefits, as well as the next generation of integration at the edge, within applications, and through multiple "fit-for-purpose" technologies.

We, as Software Engineers all work with data all day long. And we all have simple asks of that data... We want it to be there when we need it. We want it to be there quick. We want it to be consistent. Gosh darn it, we just want it to work!!!
So we can focus on building our applications without worrying about all these edge cases. But we can’t always get what we want, at least not everything that we want. And just like life is about making tradeoffs, software is too.
So let’s talk about one of those tradeoffs, and what you can do when you start relaxing constraints that you may have never needed anyway. Let’s talk about keyless Kafka.

The rise of autonomous agents and smaller, more efficient language models represents a shift towards more specialized and cost-effective AI solutions. APIs play a crucial role in deploying these models, making them accessible for various business applications.
Distinguished Technologist - Infosys Limited
For the past year or so, our industry has been intensely focused on large language models (LLMs), with numerous engineering teams eager to integrate them into their offerings. A trending approach involves developing features like “Copilot” that augment current user interaction workflows. Often, these integrations allow users to engage with a product's features through natural language by utilizing an LLM.
However, when such integrations fail, it can be an epic disaster that draws considerable attention. Consequently, companies have become more prudent about these risks, yet they also strive to keep pace with AI advancements. While big tech corporations possess the infrastructure to develop these systems, there's a notable movement towards wider access to this technology, enabling smaller teams to embark on building them without extensive knowledge or experience, potentially overlooking critical aspects in the rapid development landscape.
Most online guides that promise quick expertise typically fail to account for these advanced topics. For robust production deployment, issues such as content safety, compliance, prevention of misuse, accuracy, and security are crucial.
Having spent significant time developing LLM solutions with my team, we've gathered key insights from our practical experience. I intend to offer my point of view as an engineer collaborating with data scientists within a multi-disciplinary team about certain factors your teams may consider adapting.

APIs have been around long enough. And won't be going anywhere quickly. APIs are becoming an ever-more significant part of large organisations' digital footprint. Underpinning wider digital transformation. Whether to simplify the tech landscape; speed up innovation with API reuse; or launch new APIs as digital products to grow revenue streams and third party partnerships. The opportunities are endless. However, the ways to quantify the investment required, let alone clearly show where the benefit will be realised, can seem harder than it looks. Particularly in heavily regulated industries such as financial services or healthcare.

Software builders and operators have long looked to transport and aviation for lessons in engineering practices and safety. Today, we’ll turn our attention to the railways as we take 20 years of hindsight to look at the ‘Broady runaway’ and what it can teach us. This talk will dive into the ATSB’s subsequent safety investigation, recommendations and parallels in the software world, offering us critical lessons in complex system design and incident management.
For API builders, architects, managers and executives this is an opportunity for us to reflect and learn from the past so that we can build more resilient and easier to operate platforms in the future.
Our runaway train is a 3 car electrical multiple unit (EMU) that, in 2003, did the full 17km Broadmeadows to Spencer st run in just 16 minutes, famously without a driver on board. The cause of the runaway and resulting collision with a stationary diesel locomotive has been the talk of many rail enthusiasts ever since, especially since there were no fatalities or serious injuries.

APIs and micro services are everywhere these days, but a lot of organisations find it hard to reap the rewards that these approaches are supposed to bring. Changes in one system often still have the ability to cause issues in or bring down another system.
And one of the reasons for that is that often these services are communicating via APIs, sometimes to the point where the collection of microservices is now basically a monolith with network requests instead of function calls.
In this talk, Erwin will talk about his experience building a startup on a fully event-driven and serverless stack.
