This presentation critically examines the current discourse surrounding Large Language Models (LLMs), challenging prevailing narratives from both enthusiasts and skeptics. Drawing from a dual perspective as an AI governance professional and a machine learning researcher specializing in generative AI, the talk bridges regulatory concerns and technical realities. It focuses on distinguishing between hype and actual potential of LLM technology, while examining the disparity between imagined risks and actual harms associated with LLMs.
The discussion offers evidence-based insights into the ethical and practical challenges in the field, introducing effective practices for LLM implementation with emphasis on agentic workflows. By providing a grounded analysis that challenges common assumptions, this talk aims to contribute to more effective strategies for navigating the complexities of LLM development and governance, encouraging a reevaluation of current approaches in both areas.
Core contributor - AI, Algorithmic and Automation Incidents and Controversies (AIAAIC) organization
CIO - EDF
AI is not entirely newborn but last years came with a boom in AI as regards to the public and to th top management at commercial enterprises. You could (and you can) make « AI for fun » (used to be called « POC »), but whenever an AI project is to enter into « real life », there’s obviously a gap to compensate. Questions are: what does it look like?, and foremost: what shall I do to put the fun at work, meaning industrial, robustly and legally (rentability should be naturally implied, isn’t it?).

As a prompt engineer people always tell me it isn't real engineering, or that it's going away in five years, or even that it's already dead. In practice the top model companies and frameworks invest heavily and promote prompt engineering techniques, and new papers are released every weeks showing gains from prompting. There is a big difference however between what Twitter gurus or the average ChatGPT user is doing, and what a prompt engineer actually does day to day to earn the engineering title. To call it engineering you have to be testing how LLMs work at scale, and I'll walk through several practical examples of how to do that, as covered in my book on prompt engineering for O'Reilly and my work on client projects and my own products.
Prompt Engineer - Author of "Prompt Engineering for Generative AI: Future-Proof Inputs for Reliable AI Outputs" O'Reilly 2024

Swagger and OpenAPI revolutionized the API landscape and created a thriving ecosystem of developer tools, from IDEs to contract testing and no-code solutions. In our projects (WireMock, Jenkins, Testcontainers and WireMock Cloud) we adopted OpenAPI to provide a great developer experience including automated generation of plugins, pipeline integrations, and the creation of Mock APIs directly from OpenAPI definitions. Not everything went well. OpenAPI excels at documentation but not so much for machine processing. We had to craft our own tooling, apply some AI magic to reverse engineer specifications and build behavioral models. Most of it could have been prevented if OpenAPI v3 was more flexible and extensible.
In this talk we will discuss using OpenAPI for service modeling, also known as ""mocking"" and its impact on developer experience. Then, we will discuss the current limitations of OpenAPI 3 and offer a glimpse into the anticipated enhancements in OpenAPI v4 "Moonwalk," which we anticipate will be released in the near future. Finally, we will explore the potential synergies between OpenAPI and Async API, offering developers a promising outlook on future developments in the API landscape.

Each microservice owns entities such as an insurance policy, cargo or fruit. They are exposed through synchronous interfaces such as REST APIs and asynchronous interfaces such as messages in service buses and events in event brokers. When describing these interfaces using OpenAPI and AsyncAPI, you find yourself repeating one thing: the schema of entities owned by the microservice.
This talk shows how HDI Global SE uses xRegistry as an unopinionated schema registry to store these entity schemas in a central place. Decoupled from the integration product and the interface descriptions these schemas can be referenced by OpenAPI and AsyncAPI documents and have developer portals with catalogues built around them.

Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) is a go-to solution for aligning large language models (LLMs) with human preferences; it passes through learning a reward model that subsequently optimizes the LLM's policy. However, an inherent limitation of current reward models is their inability to fully represent the richness of human preferences and their dependency on the sampling distribution. In the first part we turn to an alternative pipeline for the fine-tuning of LLMs using pairwise human feedback. Our approach entails the initial learning of a preference model, which is conditioned on two inputs given a prompt, followed by the pursuit of a policy that consistently generates responses preferred over those generated by any competing policy, thus defining the Nash equilibrium of this preference model. We term this approach Nash learning from human feedback (NLHF) and give a new algorithmic solution, Nash-MD, founded on the principles of mirror descent. NLHF is compelling for preference learning and policy optimization with the potential of advancing the field of aligning LLMs with human preferences. In the second part of the talk we delve into a deeper theoretical understanding of fine-tuning approaches as RLHF with PPO and offline fine-tuning with DPO (direct preference optimization) based on the Bradley-Terry model and come up with a new class of LLM alignment algorithms with better both practical and theoretical properties. We finish with the newest work showing links between and building on top of them.

A dense but accessible talk about the core concepts of embeddings.
If you had a collection of every kind of animal on earth, from mules to narwhals to goldfish, how would we pick out just the animals that are housepets? And how does AI distinguish between a pack mule and a Moscow Mule?
Embeddings are numerical representations that capture the essential features and relationships of discrete objects, like words or images, in a continuous vector space, enabling tasks such as semantic search, clustering, and recommendations.
This talk introduces specialized terms and breaks them down into simple, everyday examples to help learners relate difficult concepts to familiar things. Then, it gradually builds back up to the specialized terms. This back-and-forth approach deepens understanding. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how embeddings work, their benefits, and why they are leveraged in machine learning tasks.

A zero-trust architecture is the best practice when moving to the public cloud. But when it comes to Developer eXperience, zero-trust APIs can be challenging: dealing with short-lived access tokens, creating users with expected permissions for each test case etc. It is tempting to introduce config toggles to bypass the authentication & authorization and rely on someone else to test before production.
We’ll show how we can mock the OpenID Connect protocol (token introspection, token exchange, etc.) to enable a consistent Developer eXperience, from writing component tests executed locally or in a continuous integration process, to testing in a live Kubernetes environment.

Codebases are a compilation of thousands of decisions, discussions, and documents that live across tools like Confluence, Slack, Notion, Jira, Linear, GitHub, and more - accumulated over years if not decades. Whether a developer is onboarding to your team or trying to understand how a piece of legacy code works, they waste hours every day digging for the answers through all these systems.
Unblocked augments your code with context from the tools in your stack, giving your development team a platform for asking questions, and for discovering historical context about their code. The impact here is profound: developers can answer their own questions without interrupting their peers or having to wait for meetings. What’s more, they can find the entirety of the information they need wherever they're working.
If we want to see actual productivity benefits from AI, we need to use it where we spend the most time. The more we can empower developers with the context they need, the faster we can achieve our goals and the happier we can make our teams.

APIs have been around long enough. And won't be going anywhere quickly. APIs are becoming an ever-more significant part of large organisations' digital footprint. Underpinning wider digital transformation. Whether to simplify the tech landscape; speed up innovation with API reuse; or launch new APIs as digital products to grow revenue streams and third party partnerships. The opportunities are endless. However, the ways to quantify the investment required, let alone clearly show where the benefit will be realised, can seem harder than it looks. Particularly in heavily regulated industries such as financial services or healthcare.

Data volumes are increasing at an unprecedented rate, exploding from terabytes to petabytes and sometimes exabytes of data. Traditional API approaches are laid out for transactional data and can’t handle these data volumes because they don’t scale well enough and are too expensive. At the same time, organisations are looking to monetise big data by exposing it through APIs. This allows partners and customers to analyse data to gain competitive insights, to support strategic decision making and to train AI applications. In this session, we will look at modern data architecture, review a real-world use case, understand requirements of big data applications and discuss potential solutions to building APIs for big data services.

Web API Versioning is a way to allow your developers to move quickly and break things while your clients enjoy the stable API in long cycles. It is best practice for any API-first company to have API Versioning in one way or another. Otherwise, the company will either be unable to improve their API or their clients will have their integrations broken every few months.
At Monite, we spent a great deal of time trying to make API versioning work. We went through multiple horrifying solutions until we reached something we are proud of. I'll share just how expensive API versioning can get if done incorrectly.
I'll cover all sorts of approaches you can pick to add incompatible features to your API: extremely stable and expensive, easy-looking but horrible in practice, and even completely version-less yet viable. I will provide you with the best practices of how you could find or implement a modern API versioning solution and will discuss the versioning at Stripe and Monite in great detail.
When you leave, you'll have enough information to make your API Versioning user-friendly without overburdening your developers.

For a microservices architecture to be succesful it is crucial to have the right boundaries and APIs between the microservices. But where are the right boundaries? And what is the right API? We would like to present a tool that helps us answer these questions. Domain Storytelling is a collaborative modeling method. It brings together domain experts and development teams. We let our users tell us stories about their work. While listening, we record the stories using a pictographic language. The experts can immediately see if we understand their story. After very few stories, we understand the language of our users and find different areas of the domain. Each of these areas (called a subdomain) is a good candicate to become a microservice in our architecture. In this talk we show how to find subdomains and which heuristics can help us.

For decades, software has been seen primarily as a source of automation and cost reduction. But that is changing and enterprises need to drive new revenue with the powerful integration of APIs.
Today, every large company is a software developer. The software content of everything, even a No. 2 pencil is, increasing (think: manufacturing, supply chain, pricing and demand, e-commerce, etc.). Everything we do and manufacture has some form of services behind it. Those services are driven by software. It is impossible to separate company strategy from software design. We implement one by executing on the other. Leading in competitive markets requires a software strategy that can drive revenue through new services, new channels, and new partners.
We will look at the history of APIs through the lens of software design, industry structures, vertical integrations, service delivery and technology-enabled services. By understanding the best practices and business requirements around offering APIs as products, companies can successfully expand their product and service portfolios and create new revenue streams. APIs are core to the newest digital revolution.

By 2026, every Wind Turbine in the world will be sold with a standardised digital specification sheet, or 'power curve', describing its performance in a wide range of environmental conditions.
Exchange of commercially-sensitive data like power curves hampers progress in the wind industry - there's a high risk of human error in transcribing data, it takes a long time, and finding the right turbine for the right site is painstaking.
At Octue, we've been working with stakeholders across the wind industry and with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to develop a digital standard, based on JSONSchema, to solve these problems and facilitate much more powerful and effective use of this data (whilst enabling data to be kept commercial-in-confidence).
This talk will look at digitalisation in general within the wind industry, look at the impact on CO2 emissions that this (or other such standards) can have, and look in detail at the process of developing and version-controlling JSONSchema as part of a long and slow standards evolution process.
We'll conclude with some steps we as a community may need to take, in order to foster digitalisation in the engineering sciences.

Streaming applications are scalable, resilient, and highly responsive. Yet, the event-driven architectures required to support them are still beyond the reach of most application developers.
This is because event-driven architectures introduce new data models, protocols, and APIs that aren’t found in the traditional REST/CRUD application stack.
But can we abstract event-driven architectures so that they look and feel familiar to such developers, enabling them to seamlessly create streaming apps? With the help of AsyncAPI, Postgres, and a few other pieces, the answer is yes, and in this talk, you will see how!
CEO & Co-Founder - Aklivity
The AsyncAPI Initiative is not only in charge of the specification but has created open source projects to make it easier for developers to work with the specification documents. Developers are accustomed to use a range of tooling and practices to improve the quality of their code, ranging from listing, testing, formatting, etc. However, based on our consulting experience (and recent O'Reilly book), developers tend to forget these practices when dealing with schemas.
We want to discuss what we privately teach our clients: how to re-adopt these software engineering practices for schemas to increase schema quality to create better OpenAPI and AsyncAPI specifications, and generally make better use of JSON Schema.
Director - Sourcemeta
We want to make JSON Schema validation a default procedure for any API.
To do that we need to make it a negligible part of the request handling budget, and low-overhead for the developer in the inner dev loop.
In this talk, we look at how Corvus.JsonSchema addresses this for .NET, with a schema-first approach, and SourceGenerator support for a seamless developer experience.

As applications become increasingly complex, the demand for adaptable user interfaces grows ever more critical. In the Jupyter ecosystem, where users often require unique configurations tailored to their specific needs, the traditional approach to frontend development can be cumbersome and labor-intensive. Each custom configuration typically entails significant effort in both implementation and ongoing maintenance. In this talk, we will share how we leveraged JSON Schema to create a flexible frontend capable of accommodating multiple custom use cases and configurations seamlessly. By using JSON Schema as a foundation, we were able to streamline the generation of dynamic forms and validation processes, significantly reducing development time and simplifying maintenance. Attendees will learn about our approach, the benefits of a schema-driven architecture, and practical insights that can be applied to enhance their own frontend solutions in Jupyter and beyond

When you want to design great asynchronous APIs, you need to use API First. You need to define topics and structure your definition nicely. You can use obviously Avro for a great schema, but you need to be careful where to put it. You need to be careful, about schema evolution. And probably you ask yourself, if I need one definition or do I need to divide my definition by consumers and producers. And versioning - probably another nightmare of yours.
The talk will discuss all those questions using an example and give practical guide how to define great asynchronous APIs.

This presentation examines the critical distinction between Attributional (ALCA) and Consequential (CLCA) Life Cycle Assessment approaches in the context of streaming media sustainability.
While both approaches aim to assess environmental impact, they serve fundamentally different purposes and can lead to dramatically different conclusions. ALCA provides a static snapshot of how environmental impacts are distributed among current activities, while CLCA examines how systems respond to changes.
We demonstrate why this distinction matters for streaming media sustainability through industry examples, mathematical models, and practical case studies. We explore how conflating these approaches can lead to misleading conclusions and ineffective actions, particularly in complex systems like content delivery networks and telecommunications infrastructure.
Our analysis reveals that while ALCA remains useful for regulatory compliance and reporting, CLCA becomes essential for driving meaningful environmental improvements in streaming media systems. This understanding is crucial for network engineers, system architects, and sustainability teams working to reduce the environmental impact of streaming services.

At Octue, we've been developing an app (called 'Strands') to help build, publish and evolve JSONSchema - over time and in a collaborative environment. The build process has been public (with periodic announcements and progress updates made on the JSONSchema discord) and slow (bootstrapped funding only!) but it's finally ready for the community to start using it.
This talk will introduce the Strands app, look back at the build process and key technologies, and extract some lessons (both technical and strategic!) learned from the build. Finally, we'll look at the roadmap ahead, discussing how we plan to reach the feature set that'll make it a really powerful community tool.

"Internet of Things (IoT) describes applying internet technology to devices in homes, factories, or smart cities. Obviously this space offers tremendous potential for applications like energy management, predictive maintenance, and many more. With IoT being such a wide field, many different vendors are active in it. The W3C Web of Things (WoT) standard aims at overcoming the resulting interoperability challenge.
Several WoT SDKs and tools are already available. We are specifically interested in applications that make use of WoT’s generic nature. This means that rather than building a solution for one application area, we want the solution to be able to provide value on top of any WoT device. We present a solution that allows for any WoT device to be connected. Leveraging JSON Schema, the system displays the device properties and displays generic forms for conveniently invoking device actions. We also introduce security, semantic mappings, and the ability to leverage artificial intelligence to interact with arbitrary devices more easily."

AI agents and conversational interfaces are already transforming how we interact with traditional RESTful APIs via OpenAPI, enabling new ways to leverage the intelligence of LLMs in the real world. Yet, the potential of AI agents to revolutionize event-driven architectures through AsyncAPI remains largely untapped.
This talk explores the exciting possibilities of leveraging AI agents with AsyncAPI to create conversational interfaces that can dynamically interact with event streams and asynchronous messaging systems.
Imagine being able to query and interact with Kafka event streams in natural language. You could ask to view the stream of events about a certain topic. Imagine being able to ask, in natural language, to be notified in real time if the temperature readings from a sensor go below zero. By turning AsyncAPIs into tools that an AI agent can interact with, this becomes possible and opens up a world of interesting use cases.
The talk will cover:
• The current state of AI agent usage with OpenAPI and why AsyncAPI presents new challenges and opportunities.
• How to create a conversational interface for interacting with event streams described by AsyncAPI
• Some practical examples/demos
• Considerations on the challenges and benefits of this approach

Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) involves several patterns of communication. Testing interoperability between components, even in relatively simple request-response synchronous architectures, can be significantly effort-intensive if we have to deploy all components together and test them as a whole. With EDA, this becomes almost unviable due to the numerous possible combinations of interactions.
What if I told you that by leveraging the AsyncAPI specification as an executable contract, we were able to isolate and test each component within an EDA? In doing so, we were able to shift left the identification of compatibility issues to the API design stage itself. Join this talk to understand how contract-driven development (CDD) promotes an API design-first approach to achieve independent parallel development and deployment of EDA Components.

You might have heard about unit testing if you have been developing your applications using modern techniques. As they say, ""Testing is the art of doubt!"" However, in the age of event-driven architecture, configuring the full testing environment might be intimidating. And testing use cases that weave synchronous and asynchronous tasks can become nightmares!
While Testcontainers have earned their stripes as a go-to solution for database, middleware, and cloud services integration testing, but what about your everyday asynchronous business services and APIs? Enter Microcks, an open-source cloud-native tool (OpenSource CNCF Sandbox project), ready to work with Testcontainers, and provide a solution for mocking and contract-testing your async APIs without extensive coding.
This collaboration simplifies the process of configuring environments and message brokers, allowing for the adoption of a strong Shift-Left approach to integration testing. The beauty of it is that this methodology is universally applicable, catering to a wide range of protocols, whether Apache Kafka, MQTT, RabbitMQ, NATS, or others, regardless of your technological stack, be it Java, Go, Node, or others.
We will demonstrate an incredible developer experience that truly brings joy to your developers and empowers you to build extensive and reliable integration tests and have sweet dreams!

This talk is about my journey as a Scrum Master towards creating sustainable Agile teams. I will share my learnings and inspire the audience to raise awareness on sustainability in their own teams and organizations.
I dove into the subject of sustainable IT and started with a ‘Planet as a Stakeholder Retrospective’ for my Scrum Team in which we went over the Principles of Green Software Engineering. We discussed what steps our team could take to reduce the carbon footprint of our services. Taking the sustainability perspective was a new approach for the team, but everyone agreed on its importance.
During that session, the team estimated that optimizing our landscape and decommissioning legacy components could reduce our footprint by a significant percentage! Just imagine: what if all Agile teams would do that? I started to give workshops about ‘the Planet as a Stakeholder’, in which I help teams to look at their IT services through the sustainability lens and let them define the first steps forward.
In this talk I will share my experiences: failures, challenges, successes, and examples of practical steps that teams have already taken to reduce their carbon footprint (by up to 45%).

In order for us to know what to measure, we need to know where we’re heading. How many of us are stopping to imagine the new world we’re working so hard to create?
If we travel 30 years into the future what will we see around us to indicate we won? What does our collective big picture of success look like?
So many questions!
In this talk, Hannah will explore how we can answer those questions, and why they are crucial to achieving our goals of a sustainable, and dare we say, bold regenerative digital future.
