WHY JOIN APIDAYS LIVE LONDON WHAT IS APIDAYS?

Enters the Banks versus Brands war. When a bank is able to expose its capabilities via an API in a white label fashion, a large consumer brand (think Uber, for instance) can act like the front office and engage, connect and sell banking products directly to their community. For the past century, banks have been able to develop strong brand awareness, but in the digital era, strong brands are not banks anymore.

At apidays London, we will address this new challenge banks are facing and how with APIs they can embrace platform and ecosystem business models while keeping control and continuing to capture value.

Banks have been forced by regulation to open APIs, because of a lack of innovation in the past 20 years. This opened up the “Fintech Era”, where entrepreneurs and capital investors have seen the opportunity to collect the value that they will capture from the banks.

But some banks “fought back”, and embraced open banking beyond regulation as an opportunity to develop platform banking and ecosystem banking, all powered by APIs. To do so, they had to develop an API mindset across the entire organization, from the practitioners to the business stakeholders to the top management.

Today, there is a tense relationship between banks and fintechs in delivering value to the customers. Will banks be able to become platforms through their API strategy? Will they develop end-user applications to compete with their fintech ecosystem? Will Fintech continue to consume Banks’ APIs instead of building their own capabilities?
